Capt Krishnamurthy highlighted the importance of this training and sound operating procedures as mitigating tools for the much awaited transition from paper charts to ECDIS. He emphasized that the Nautical Institute spearheaded the IMO strategy for the implementation of the overarching e-Navigation concept within which ECDIS as a building block. He underlined that bridge ergonomics, robust and reliable navigational tools, sensible information display and control system were designed within the e-Nav umbrella to assist, engage and support the navigator who would be at the center of the decision and execution matrix.

Later in his introductory message, Mr. Sanjeev S.Vakil, Managing Director, HIMT thanked the Chief Guest for gracing the occasion and thanked DGS for speedily granting deemed approval in just one day of submission of the proposal. He was glad about India being among the top few to implement STCW 2010. He was optimistic that India would make it to the white list very soon, as many other institutes of India have also received the approval for ECDIS as well as other courses complying with STCW 2010 requirements. He expected several institutes to commence the course shortly, with atleast 5 institutes in Chennai itself. HIMT has been conducting ECDIS ever since 2004, as a value added course, including an approved course under Marshall Island administration. He further added, “we kept a low profile in the ECDIS after the manila amendments came into force, as we did not want ECDIS to become one more SSO course, which was also conducted as a Value added course and same candidates came back again and had to undergo a DGS approved course.”
The Chief Guest of the Valedictory function, Capt.A.K.Bansal a renowned legal luminary and a maritime arbitrator did the honors by distributing the course completion certificates to the first batch of ECDIS course at the Valedictory function.
